A non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is applied to obtain Pareto optimal solutions in widely used advanced machining processes, i.e., electric discharge machining, electrochemical micromachining, ultrasonic machining, abrasive water jet machining. The solutions obtained using the proposed method is in the form of the Pareto-optimal front, thus, any solution is acceptable and can be utilized to obtain optimum performance of the considered processes. The obtained results using NSGA-II show good agreement with the results of previous researchers. Implementation of the proposed method shows benefits to the process engineer of the industries as they can select alternative parameters based on the requirement.

The constrained applications of conventional machining processes in generating complex shape ge-ometries with the desired degree of tolerance and surface finish in various advanced engineering materials are being gradually compensated by the non-traditional machining (NTM) processes. These NTM processes usually have higher procurement, maintenance, operating and tooling cost. Hence, in order to attain their maximum machining performance, they are usually operated at their optimal or near optimal parametric settings which can easily be determined by the application of dif-ferent optimization techniques. In this paper, 133 international research papers published during 2012-16 on parametric optimization of NTM processes are extensively reviewed to have an idea on the selected process parameters, observed responses, work materials machined and optimization techniques employed in those processes while generating varying part geometries for their industrial use. It is observed that electro discharge machining is the mostly employed NTM process, applied voltage is the identified process parameter with maximum importance, surface roughness and material removal rate are the two maximally preferred responses, different steel grades are the mostly machined work materials and grey relational analysis is the most popular tool utilized for para-metric optimization of NTM processes. These observations would help the process engineers to attain the machining performance of the NTM processes at their fullest extents for different work material and shape feature combinations.

To better meet the qualitative and quantitative requirements of customers or relevant sector managers, workshop environments are implementing increasingly complex task management systems. The job shop scheduling problem (JSSP) involves assigning each task to a single machine while scheduling many tasks on different machines. Finding the best scheduling for machines is one of the challenging optimizations of difficult non-deterministic polynomial (NP) time problems. The fundamental goal of optimization is to shorten the makespan (total execution time of all tasks). This paper is interested in the joint resolution of scheduling and transport problems and more particularly the Job-shop problem with Routing (JSSPR) as opposed to the Job-shop problem with Transport (JSSPT). These two problems are modeled in the form of a disjunctive graph. For the JSSPT, the solution to the transport problem is not linked to any quality of service (QoS) criterion and the solution is therefore often semi-active. The Job-shop with Routing explicitly considers transport operations and uses algorithms from the transport community to solve the transport problem. It is shown that the routing part of the JSSPR is a problem of the vehicle routing family and of the Pickup and Delivery Problem family. QoS in the JSSPR is defined by the duration of tours, the duration of transport of parts and the waiting time for them. A new evaluation function – named Time-Lag Insertion Heuristic (TLH) – is proposed to evaluate a disjunctive graph by simultaneously minimizing the makespan and maximizing the quality of service. Thus, the solution obtained is not semi-active, but a compromise between the different criteria. This evaluation function is included in a metaheuristic. Our numerical evaluations demonstrate that, on the one hand, the TLH evaluation can find almost optimal solutions regarding the QoS criterion; and on the other hand, the TLH evaluation is not very sensitive to the order of insertion of the maximum time-lags during the different minimization steps.

Poor urban planning and traffic congestion lead to excessive delays in workers’ transit times and decrease their quality of life, especially in emerging countries. Several medium and large companies have a need to hire a transport service for their staff. In this type of transportation system, there is a heterogeneous fleet of vehicles, which are assigned to a set of predefined routes. However, the total transport delay can be even greater if the private transportation system is inefficient or not controlled. The approach proposed in this study seeks to optimize the private transport service by defining the best allocation of its fleet to its routes. A mathematical model is proposed to minimize user wait times. This approach is validated using real data obtained from a transport company in Co-lombia. The results demonstrate the quantitative benefits that can be achieved when the proposed approach is implemented, represented by a considerable reduction in user wait times.

Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) is widely used to perform cladding so as to enhance corrosion resistance and several other properties of substrate material. However, the success of cladding us-ing GMAW depends on the optimal selection of its critical parameters. Therefore, in this study, the cladding of stainless steel over mild steel substrate using GMAW process is investigated with an aim to optimize the GMAW process parameters. Three GMAW process parameters i.e. current, voltage, and torch angle were selected and their effect on the time required to complete the cladding and arc power was investigated and optimized. Multiple objective optimization based on ratio anal-ysis (MOORA) method was employed to evaluate and optimize the effect of the selected process parameters. It was found that the current and voltage have significant effect in reducing the time and power required for the cladding process.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of factors such as cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut on surface roughness and Material Removed Rate (MRR) when machining in dry face milling AISI 1040 steel with coated carbide inserts GC1030 using the response surface methodology (RSM). For this purpose, a number of machining experiments based on statistical three-factor and three-level factorial experiment designs, completed (L27) with a statistical analysis of variance (ANOVA), were performed in order to develop mathematical models and to identify the significant factors of these technological parameters. Multi-objective optimization procedure for minimizing Ra, Ry and Rz and maximizing MRR using desirability approach has been also implementented. The current study was also carried out to investigate the tool life of the inserts. The models found the relationship between the cutting parameters (Vc, fz and ap) and the studied technological parameters. It has been found that the cutting speed was the most affecting surface roughness which is due to the geometry of the insert which has a scraping edge and enables to obtain low roughness even at important feed rate, followed by the feed rate and the depth of cut at the end. The optimal combination of cutting parameters were cutting speed of 314 m/min, feed rate of 0.16 mm/tooth and depth of cut of 0.6 mm with a composite desirability of 0.924.

In a continuous manufacturing environment where production and consumption occur simultaneously, one of the biggest challenges is the efficient management of production and inventory system. In order to manage the integrated production inventory system economically it is necessary to identify the optimal production time and the optimal production reorder point that either maximize the profit or minimize the cost. In addition, during production the process has to go through some natural phenomena like random breakdown of machine, deterioration of product over time, uncertainty in repair time that eventually create the possibility of shortage. In this situation, efficient management of inventory & production is crucial. This paper addresses the situation where a perishable (deteriorated) product is manufactured and consumed simultaneously, the demand of this product is stable over the time, machine that produce the product also face random failure and the time to repair this machine is also uncertain. In order to describe this scenario more appropriately, the continuously reviewed Economic Production Quantity (EPQ) model is considered in this research work. The main goal is to identify the optimal production uptime and the production reorder point that ultimately minimize the expected value of total cost consisting of machine setup, deterioration, inventory holding, shortage and corrective maintenance cost.

To ensure that national development objectives in rural areas are achieved evenly and sustainably, the Government of Indonesia applies the principles of Village Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are derivative programs of SDGs. One of the indicators in measuring the progress and independence of villages in Indonesia is the availability of cellular phone signal access. Cellular phone signals have a vital role because most internet users in Indonesia rely on mobile data connections from cellular operators. However, the signal emitted by a provider tower has a limited range. According to the data of the Developing Villages Index in 2022, Tasikmalaya Regency is one of the regencies with the highest number of villages that have weak signal strength in West Java Province, Indonesia. To examine the effect of distance and height difference between the placement of the nearest provider tower and the location of the Village Office on the internet signal strength category in Tasikmalaya Regency, Logistic Spatial Autoregressive modeling is needed. In this study, the Bayesian Markov-Chain Monte Carlo estimation method was used, because it has advantages in flexibility and computational efficiency. In spatial modeling, there is a spatial weight matrix determined by the researcher’s understanding of the observed phenomenon. The variable observed in this study is signal strength, which has an orientation at a distance. However, there are several types of distance-based spatial weight matrices, such as K-nearest neighbor, radial distance, power distance, and exponential distance. To determine the most suitable distance-based spatial weight matrix in internet signal strength modeling, the four (4) weight matrices were compared based on the goodness of fit measure models, calculated from the confusion matrix. The results of the analysis showed that the radial distance weight matrix with a threshold distance of d = 1.7km is the most suitable use of distance-based spatial weight matrix in internet signal modeling in Tasikmalaya Regency. The weight matrix exerted a positive spatial autocorrelation effect of 57.141%. In addition, the height difference factor between the location of the provider tower with the location of the village office has a greater effect than the horizontal distance.

A dynamic system differs from a static system in that it contains signal factor and the target value depends on the level of the signal factor set by the system operator. The aim of optimizing a multi-response dynamic system is to find a setting combination of input controllable factors that would result in optimum values of all response variables at all signal levels. The most commonly used performance metric for optimizing a multi-response dynamic system is the composite desirability function (CDF). The advantage of using CDF is that it is a simple unit less measure and it has a good foundation in statistical practice. However, the problem with the CDF is that it does not consider the variability of the individual response variables. Moreover, if the specification limits for the response variables are not provided the CDF cannot be computed. In this paper, a new performance metric for multi-response dynamic system, called multiple regression-based weighted signal-to-noise ratio (MRWSN) is proposed, which overcome the limitations of CDF. Two sets of experimental data on multi-response dynamic systems, taken from literature, are analysed using both CDF-based and the proposed MRWSN-based approaches for optimization. The results show that the MRWSN-based approach also results in substantially better optimization performance than the CDF-based approach.

Digitization technology has developed in the preservation of cultural heritage, especially ancient manuscripts. In this context, image retrieval methods allow for efficient access to the information contained in ancient manuscripts. Optimization techniques play a role in building an effective image retrieval method. This paper presents a systematic literature review that focuses on the role of optimization in digital image retrieval methods for preserving ancient manuscripts as part of cultural heritage preservation. This paper is organized based on the following research questions: (1) What are the research objectives regarding optimization in digital image retrieval of ancient manuscripts?; (2) What is the role of optimization in image retrieval methods for the preservation of ancient manuscripts?; and (3) How have existing studies determined the formulation of novel and new research? This study involved searching articles through Scopus, Dimensions, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases and using bibliometric analysis to visualize research themes and trends. The results of the literature review show that research related to the role of optimization in the digital image retrieval method of ancient manuscripts is still open and this paper can be used as a reference for further research on this topic.
