Bin packing problem (BPP) is a combinatorial optimization problem with a wide range of applications in fields such as financial budgeting, load balancing, project management, supply chain management. Harmony search algorithm (HSA) is widely used for various real-world and engineering problems due to its simplicity and efficient problem solving capability. Literature shows that basic HSA needs improvement in search capability as the performance of the algorithm degrades with increase in the problem complexity. This paper presents HSA with improved exploration and exploitation capability coupled with local iterative search based on random swap operator for solving BPP. The study uses the despotism based approach presented by Yadav et al. (2012) [Yadav P., Kumar R., Panda S.K., Chang, C. S. (2012). An intelligent tuned harmony search algorithm for optimisation. Information Sciences, 196, 47-72.] to divide Harmony memory (HM) into two categories which helps to maintain balance between exploration and exploitation. Secondly, local iterative search explores multiple neighborhoods by exponentially swapping components of solution vectors. A problem specific HM representation, HM re-initialization strategy and two adaptive PAR strategies are tested. The performance of proposed HSA is evaluated on 180 benchmark instances which consists of 100, 200 and 500 objects. Evaluation metrics such as best, mean, success rate, acceleration rate and improvement measures are used to compare HSA variations. The performance of the HSA with iterative local search outperforms other two variations of HSA.

In this paper, we introduce a unified mathematical formulation for the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP) and for the Capacitated Location Routing Problem (CLRP), adopting radiality constraints in order to guarantee valid routes and eliminate subtours. This idea is inspired by formulations already employed in electric power distribution networks, which requires a radial topology in its operation. The results show that the proposed formulation greatly improves the convergence of the solver.

We investigated a variant of the customer order scheduling problem taking into consideration due dates to minimize the total tardiness. Since the problem under study is NP-hard, we propose an efficient size reduction algorithm (SR). We perform an extensive computational experience and compare our proposition with JPO-20 matheuristic, the best existing algorithm for the problem under study. We use the Relative Deviation Index (RDI) and the Success Rate (SRa) as the statistical indicators for the performance measure. We must emphasize that SR presented the lowest average RDI (around 15.5 %), whereas the JPO-20 presented an average RDI approximately three times higher (around 52.5 %). Furthermore, the proposed SR presented a higher average SRa (around 66.9%), whereas the JPO-20 presented a lower average success (around 25.7%). Our proposal used a lower computational effort, resulting in a reduction for the computation times of approximately 22%. The obtained results point to the superiority of the proposed SR in comparison with the JPO-20.

In this paper, a heuristic algorithm based on Tabu Search Approach for solving the Vehicle Routing Problem with Backhauls (VRPB) is proposed. The problem considers a set of customers divided in two subsets: Linehaul and Backhaul customers. Each Linehaul customer requires the delivery of a given quantity of product from the depot, whereas a given quantity of product must be picked up from each Backhaul customer and transported to the depot. In the proposed algorithm, each route consists of one sub-route in which only the delivery task is done, and one sub-route in which only the collection process is performed. The search process allows obtaining a correct order to visit all the customers on each sub-route. In addition, the proposed algorithm determines the best connections among the sub-routes in order to obtain a global solution with the minimum traveling cost. The efficiency of the algorithm is evaluated on a set of benchmark instances taken from the literature. The results show that the computing times are greatly reduced with a high quality of solutions. Finally, conclusions and suggestions for future works are presented.

This paper presents the implementation of an efficient modified genetic algorithm for solving the multi-traveling salesman problem (mTSP). The main characteristics of the method are the construction of an initial population of high quality and the implementation of several local search operators which are important in the efficient and effective exploration of promising regions of the solution space. Due to the combinatorial complexity of mTSP, the proposed methodology is especially applicable for real-world problems. The proposed algorithm was tested on a set of six benchmark instances, which have from 76 and 1002 cities to be visited. In all cases, the best known solution was improved. The results are also compared with other existing solutions procedure in the literature.

During the past two decades, there have been increasing interests on permutation flow shop with different types of objective functions such as minimizing the makespan, the weighted mean flow-time etc. The permutation flow shop is formulated as a mixed integer programming and it is classified as NP-Hard problem. Therefore, a direct solution is not available and meta-heuristic approaches need to be used to find the near-optimal solutions. In this paper, we present a new discrete firefly meta-heuristic to minimize the makespan for the permutation flow shop scheduling problem. The results of implementation of the proposed method are compared with other existing ant colony optimization technique. The preliminary results indicate that the new proposed method performs better than the ant colony for some well known benchmark problems.
