Differential evolution (DE) is an effective and powerful approach and it has been widely used in different environments. However, the performance of DE is sensitive to the choice of control parameters. Thus, to obtain optimal performance, time-consuming parameter tuning is necessary. Backtracking Search Optimization Algorithm (BSA) is a new evolutionary algorithm (EA) for solving real-valued numerical optimization problems. An ensemble algorithm called E-BSADE is proposed which incorporates concepts from DE and BSA. The performance of E-BSADE is evaluated on several benchmark functions and is compared with basic DE, BSA and conventional DE mutation strategy. Also the performance results are compared with state of the art PSO variant.

The Indian cement industry has adopted various environmental protection technologies, but adoption of these new environmental technologies and development of working model could not resolve many issues related to environmental concern among Stakeholders. This paper examined the current technologies used by the cement companies and the challenges they are facing in adoption of these technologies. This research describes the effects of cement manufacturing on global warming, water, coal and other pollution emissions during cement production process and involves environmental manufacturing technologies. The study measures the challenges of introducing environmental technologies by creating a model of challenges. including challenges in perceived usability of technology, challenges in perceived utility, challenges in user engagement, and challenges in intent to use behaviour. The study examines the challenges of introducing environmental technologies into the Indian cement industry to mitigate air, water, and energy pollution and to highlight the new environmental technologies and development of the model. The data from 1540 professionals responsible for using the environmental technology were gathered and analysed with t test and regression analysis. The final outcome of the research is the model expressing the challenges in adoption of environmental technologies in India.

Permutation flow shop scheduling problems have been an interesting area of research for over six decades. Out of the several parameters, minimization of makespan has been studied much over the years. The problems are widely regarded as NP-Complete if the number of machines is more than three. As the computation time grows exponentially with respect to the problem size, heuristics and meta-heuristics have been proposed by many authors that give reasonably accurate and acceptable results. The NEH algorithm proposed in 1983 is still considered as one of the best simple, constructive heuristics for the minimization of makespan. This paper analyses the powerful job insertion technique used by NEH algorithm and proposes seven new variants, the complexity level remains same. 120 numbers of problem instances proposed by Taillard have been used for the purpose of validating the algorithms. Out of the seven, three produce better results than the original NEH algorithm.

This paper endeavors to investigate whether the Islamic financial system can tackle the issue of financial exclusion in India or not. The present study has made an earnest attempt to explore the discriminating factors behind choosing of the institutes (conventional or Islamic), in decreasing order of their importance. Data for the study are collected from 635 respondents, who are customers of Islamic and traditional financial institutes. The area selected for the survey is the state of Kerala, which is considered as the Islamic finance hub in India. The data collected are analyzed by employing the discriminant analysis along with drawing inferences from descriptive statistics. The study finds various factors in descending order of their importance. The factors are type of employment, religion (Muslim/Non-Muslim), income and gender. These are discriminating factors for choosing particular institutes (conventional or Islamic). The study shows that Islamic finance system was chosen by those, particularly Muslims, who did not have good employment and sufficient income. Hence, it is recommended that extensive formal beginning of Islamic finance in India, will lead to higher financial inclusion, since generally the financially excluded individuals belong to the said segments of the society, furthermore, Islamic finance is highly fascinated by the mentioned groups, the planners should think accordingly. The study is novel in its’ approach as it evidently illustrates that Islamic financial system is chosen by those, who do not have good employment, Muslims and those who earn less. Thus, there should be extensive formal commencement of Islamic finance in India to kick off higher financial inclusion.

A simple yet powerful optimization algorithm is proposed in this paper for solving the constrained and unconstrained optimization problems. This algorithm is based on the concept that the solution obtained for a given problem should move towards the best solution and should avoid the worst solution. This algorithm requires only the common control parameters and does not require any algorithm-specific control parameters. The performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated by implementing it on 24 constrained benchmark functions having different characteristics given in Congress on Evolutionary Computation (CEC 2006) and the performance is compared with that of other well-known optimization algorithms. The results have proved the better effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Furthermore, the statistical analysis of the experimental work has been carried out by conducting the Friedman’s rank test and Holm-Sidak test. The proposed algorithm is found to secure first rank for the ‘best’ and ‘mean’ solutions in the Friedman’s rank test for all the 24 constrained benchmark problems. In addition to solving the constrained benchmark problems, the algorithm is also investigated on 30 unconstrained benchmark problems taken from the literature and the performance of the algorithm is found better.

Learning curves monitor the performance of workers for the given new task as well as it is a mathematical representation of the same learning process which can be analyzed after frequent repetitions. Now-a-days learning curve is a promotion effective tool for management concern with designing and controlling the process of imperfect production and redesigning unbalanced business operations in the production of goods or services related to scheduling, uncontrolled inventory management, quality management as well as inspection. Learning effect has direct impact in calculation of profit or loss. Generally, a business seller, in order to increase his sale prefers to lend his products to buyers for a definite period of time. There is no penalty before or during this definite time period however after the duration of lending time period is over, he will assign some extra charges. For this action, seller offers a trade credit financing period to his buyer. Assuming when buyer receives a lot he separates the defective and non-defective items by a screening process and defective items are then sold at a discounted price. The percentage of defective items decreases per lot according to learning curve. Seller too plans which condition is beneficial for good coordination of retailers and analysts. Different cases are explained broadly in this model to get maximum profit. In this paper, a fiscal construction feature model for imperfect quality items with trade credit policy is analyzed under the effects of learning. Total profit function per cycle has been derived with the help of involvement of different costs and related parameters for the retailers and a numerical example given ahead shows the verification of results. The impacts of key parameters of the model are studied by sensitivity analysts to deduce managerial insights.

Clustering is a popular data mining technique for grouping a set of objects into clusters so that objects in one cluster are very similar and objects in different clusters are quite distinct. K-means (KM) algorithm is an efficient data clustering method as it is simple in nature and has linear time complexity. However, it has possibilities of convergence to local minima in addition to dependence on initial cluster centers. Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm is a stochastic optimization method inspired by intelligent foraging behavior of honey bees. In order to make use of merits of both algorithms, a hybrid algorithm (MABCKM) based on modified ABC and KM algorithm is proposed in this paper. The solutions produced by modified ABC are treated as initial solutions for the KM algorithm. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with the ABC and KM algorithms on various data sets from the UCI repository. The experimental results prove the superiority of the MABCKM algorithm for data clustering applications.

In most of the published articles dealing with optimal order quantity model under permissible delay in payments, it is assumed that the supplier only put forwards fully permissible delay in payments if retailer ordered a bulky sufficient quantity otherwise permissible delay in payments would not be permitted. Practically, in competitive market environments and recession phases of business, every supplier wants to attract more retailers by the help of providing good facilities for trading. Necessity of order quantity may put a negative pressure on supplier’s demand. So, within the economic order quantity (EOQ) framework the main purpose of this paper is to broaden this extreme case by introducing a new credit policy, Flexible Trade Credit Policy (FTCP), for supplier which can help him provide more free space of trading to retailers. This policy, after adopting by suppliers, not only provides attractive trading environments for retailers but also enhances the demand of supplier due to the large number of new retailers. Here in, under this policy, an inventory system is investigated as a cost minimization problem to establish the retailer’s optimal inventory cycle time and optimal order quantity. Three theorems are established to describe and to lighten optimal replenishment policies for the retailer. Finally, numerical examples are considered to illustrate all these theorems and managerial insights are given based on considered numerical examples.

In this study, a single product is considered which starts to deteriorate with constant rate of replenishment and demand rate is time and price dependent exponential function. Shortage is allowed with partial back logging and the relationship between backorder rate and waiting time is considered to be exponential. The aim is to decide pricing strategy and maximize total average profit function. Total profit function is optimized analytically and proved to be concave function of price. Finally, numerical example is given to illustrate the implementation of the algorithm followed by the sensitivity analysis.

This paper presents an experimental study on rough cut, trim cut using distilled water as a dielectric fluid and Al & Si metal powders in dielectric fluid for WEDM of Nimonic-90. First, the influence of discharge energy (DE) in rough cut is evaluated for machining rate (MR) and surface roughness (SR) and compared with trim cut without any metal powder additives in dielectric fluid. The effect of Al and Si metal powders (varying concentration of 1g/L, 2g/L and 3g/L) in dielectric fluid is studied separately and comparison is also made for MR, SR, recast layer and micro hardness of machined Nimonic-90. From the results it is observed that using trim cut, a fine and uniform surface texture is obtained irrespective of the high discharge energy of rough cut. Al and Si powders additives show a significant reduction in MR for trim cutting operation whereas a remarkable modification is obtained in surface textures after trim cut using metals powder mixed dielectric. SR improves with a concentration of 1g/L and shows a little increase with high concentration of both metals powder. Using metals powder in dielectric fluid, the recast layer becomes smooth and denser and thus, micro hardness increases.
