This paper presents an empirical investigation to study the effect of industry type on relationship between Tobin’s Q and working capital management among selected firms from Tehran Stock Exchange. The proposed study gathers the necessary financial information from 219 different firms over the period 2001-2011 and categorizes them based on different sectors. There are five independent variables including current ratio, the ratio of current assets to total assets, debt ratio, the ratio of current liabilities to total assets and total cash. Using a linear regression by considering type of industry as dummy variable, the study detects that there was a positive and meaningful relationship between working capital and Tobin-Q in various industries.

This paper presents an empirical investigation to study the relationship between future profitability and abnormal accruals on selected firms from Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE). The study selects 223 firms from TSE market over the period 2007-2011. Using the regression analysis, the study shows there was no meaningful relationship between abnormal earnings and future profitability when the level of significance is five percent. There are also seven sub-hypotheses associated with the proposed study of this paper. The results indicate that while there were no meaningful relationship between firm size, capital expenditure, earnings quality and earning forecasted error on one side and future earnings, the study confirms a significance relationship between ratio of book value to equity as well as market leverage and future earnings.

Capital structure plays essential role on financial strength of business units and there are literally many studies to confirm the relationship between capital structure and return growth. In this paper, we re-examine this relationship by investigating on 12 Iranian private banks using structural equation modelling over the period 2005-2011. The proposed study of this paper designs a questionnaire and distributes it among experts and analyse it use LISREL software package. The result indicates that there is a positive and meaningful relationship, when the level of significance is five percent between capital structure and stock return in private banking industry in Iran. The implementation of Pearson and Spearman correlation tests also validate the findings.

This study examines the relationship between CAMELS index and default probability among 20 Iranian banks. The proposed study gathers the necessary information from their financial statements over the period 2005-2011. The study uses logistic regression along with Pearson correlation analysis to consider the relationship between default probability and six independent variables including capital adequacy, asset quality, management quality, earning quality, liquidity quality and sensitivity of market risk. The results indicate that there were no meaningful relationship between default probability and three independent variables including capital adequacy, asset quality and sensitivity of market risk. However, the results of our statistical tests support such relationship between default probability and three other variables including management quality, earning quality and liquidity quality.

Among the activists of the money market, banks as the most important financial institutions undertake an important role in optimal appropriation of financial short-term resources. Furthermore, they allocate the short-term surplus funds to enterprises, which have a short-term need. Holding a main part of the funds in economy circulation, banks have a critical role in adjustment of economic relations. Banks are facing different types of risks in their daily operations. In the banking system, the CAMELS indictors are used to evaluate and rate of the performance of banks. The CAMELS rating model is one of the most effective systems of financial assessment in banks. Therefore, in this research, the effects of CAMELS indicators of banks on risk taking of Iranian banks are studied. The statistical population of the national banking system includes all governmental and private banks. The whole statistical population is studied as a research sample during 2006-2011. Taking into consideration the fact that the research data or section-bounded and time-bounded, a combinational regression analysis has been used. The results of the combinational regression analysis have supported the presence of a reverse and meaningful effect of the indicators of assets quality and sensitivity of market risk on risk taking in national banks. In addition, the results have supported the direct and meaningful effects of capital sufficiency and quality of profit-making on risk taking, however, the effects of the indicators of management quality and liquidity quality on risk taking have been rejected.

In this paper, we present a study to measure the relationship between top management turnover with earnings management and default risk and earnings forecast error in the Tehran Stock Exchange. The proposed study selects necessary information from 117 firms from the exchange over the period 2005-2010 and, using ordinary least squares technique as well as Pearson correlation ratios, examine three hypotheses of this paper. The results of the survey indicate that there are some meaningful relationships between change in top management with earning management, default risk and earning forecast error.

In this survey, we have investigated whether an easy and comprehensive information technology (IT) infrastructure could contribute on auditing system in Iranian business society. The survey designs and distributes a questionnaire based on technology adoption method (TAM) among employees of bank Melli Iran who participated in our survey in Likert scale and using t-student and Kruskal-Wallis test examined different hypotheses. The results of our survey have indicated that there was a relationship between a good perception in usefulness of IT implementation and accepting recent advances of IT and auditors with good perception on IT are able to take advantage of recent advances of IT in their auditing skills. In addition, our survey has concluded that ease of IT implementation could create motivation among auditors to automate their traditional skills. While educational background played an important role on our survey, age and job experience did not have any impact on our survey.

Insurance industry includes a significant part of economy and it is important to learn more about the capabilities of different firms, which are active in this industry. In this paper, we present an empirical study to rank the insurance firms using analytical hierarchy process as well as factor analysis. The study considers four criteria including capital adequacy, quality of earning, quality of cash flow and quality of firms’ assets. The results of the implementation of factor analysis (FA) have been verified using Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO=0.573) and Bartlett & apos; s Chi-Square (443.267 P-value=0.000) tests. According to the results FA, the first important factor, capital adequacy, represents 21.557% of total variance, the second factor, quality of income, represents 20.958% of total variance. In addition, the third factor, quality of cash flow, represents 19.417% of total variance and the last factor, quality of assets, represents 18.641% of total variance. The study has also used analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to rank insurance firms. The results of our survey indicate that capital adequacy (0.559) is accounted as the most important factor followed by quality of income (0.235), quality of cash flow (0.144) and quality of assets (0.061). The results of AHP are consistent with the results of FA, which somewhat validates the overall study.

During the past few years, there have been tremendous works on detecting the relationship between banks performance and the number of seats on board of directors. Board of directors of banks is responsible for shareholders ownership’s interest. In this study, governance and ownership characteristics affecting risk appetite on some private banks listed in Tehran Stock Exchange is studied. The study investigates 12 private banks for a period 2005-2011 based on the implementation of some regression analysis using panel data. The results indicate that the effect of five major shareholders on risk-taking is positive and significant. The effect of institutional ownership on risk-taking is negative and significant. Effects of other variables, including the percentage of ownership concentration, return on assets and the logarithm of cash from operations (CFO) on risk-taking of the private banks are not significant. The effects of board size, reliance on debt and log of assets on risk-taking are significantly negative among private banks in Iran. These results indicate that shareholders that are institutional investors play a key role in monitoring managers.

A good portfolio optimization on banks’ currency holdings not only helps meet their needs but also it increases banks’ total assets. During the past few months, US sanctions against Iran has influenced profitability banking currency portfolio holding. The proposed model of this paper considers the weekly information of two years before and after sanctions occurred in Iranian banking system. Therefore, the study uses 210 weekly data and proposes a method to analyze the data to measure the performance of banking currency portfolio after sanction happens. The proposed model of this paper provides lost profit and unrealized loss and using the idea of Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) we rank the resulted data. Next, we use some parametric and non-parametric methods to see whether there is any change as a result of sanction on the performance of the portfolio. The results indicate that not only the performance of the portfolio was reduced but also the variance of the return after sanction has been increased.
